Obituary for Walter Earl Spillum

Walter Earl Spillum was born on January 12, 1928 in Niagara, North Dakota to Earl and Della Esther (Pavne) Spillum. He died at the age of 87 in Tokyo, Japan after a very short illness on April 28, 2015. A memorial service was held in Tokyo on May 3rd.

Walter graduated from Larimore High School in 1945. He attended the University of North Dakota, University of Southern California, and earned a marketing degree from New York University in 1955.

After attending a wedding in Japan in the late 1950's and gaining a great admiration for the Japanese culture, Mr. Spillum moved to Japan to live. In 1961 he began a career of selling per-fabricated American style homes manufactured by the Lindal Company in Seattle, Washington to the Japanese market.

He will be remembered for his creation, in 1998, of Hibikinokai – Echo Society of Japan, as a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching the English language and computer skills to the disabled, elderly, blind, and the general public for improved communication skills in Japan. He also worked to assist this same group of people to give them better independent living skills and transportation. He continued his work until the time of his death. He was a dedicated member of the American Council of the Blind.

He will be buried with his parents in Persilla Watts Cemetery in Rugby at a private ceremony this summer. Among his survivors are his brother, Jack Spillum, Sr. and Jack Spillum, Jr.
