Obituary for Joyce Loucks

Joyce Elaine Strand Loucks was born, one of five children to Elmer and Sophie Mohr Strand on May 21, 1923 in Lisbon, North Dakota. She died on Monday, April 30, 2018, at the Heart of America Medical Center Care Center in Rugby, North Dakota.

Graveside services will be held at Persilla Watts Cemetery in Rugby on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Barbara Haugerud, officiating.

Joyce was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Lisbon. She attended grades 1-12 and graduated from the Lisbon Public School system. Following graduation, Joyce attended a secretarial course at North Dakota State Normal College in Ellendale. Following completion of this training, she began working for the Federal Farm Agency in LaMoure County – North Dakota. It was during her years working in LaMoure County that she would make the acquaintance of Curtis L. Loucks, whom she would marry in 1948.

Growing up during the 1920's and 1930's provided some lifelong lessons and memories for Joyce. Her mother was a “stay at home mom” and her dad was a stone mason. The family lived a very modest life style and yet enjoyed and appreciated simple forms of recreation and entertainment available in those days. Joyce and her siblings grew up within a few blocks of the Sheyenne River as did the rest of the townspeople. She, along with many other young people learned to swim in the summer and ice skate in the winter on the Sheyenne as well enjoy the Lisbon Community Park.

In order to help provide food, families at that time were allowed to keep limited amounts of livestock within the city borders. Her parents kept a dairy cow and also their own poultry as did many other townspeople of that era. Joyce and her siblings therefore had some responsibility with the care of these critters. Her parents also had three fairly sizable gardens which required attention from all family members at one time or another.

Once she had her secretarial training and became employed she was given a sense of security, a sense of achievement and independence. Joyce continued with her employment at LaMoure for a number of years. On June 27, 1948, she was united in marriage to Curtis L. Loucks of LaMoure. They made their home in Langdon, North Dakota from the summer of 1948 until the summer of 1957. By that time, Joyce and Curtis were the parents of three children, LaNeta, Wendy, and Brian. The family moved to Rugby at that time. In 1958, the fourth child, Laurie was born thus completing the family unit. They were married for 67 years until Curtis' death on November 13, 2015.

Joyce was very active in the Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby as long as her health allowed. She spent several decades teaching Sunday school and had also served as superintendent of the Sunday school. She was a church circle member for decades and tried to do whatever possible to be an active participant. She had been an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star while the organization was still functioning in Rugby. She was a long time member of one of the local homemakers clubs. Her hobbies included letter writing, caring for her plants both indoors and outdoors, reading the Minot Daily News and in later years she became a fan of certain televised game shows.

Those left to remember and appreciate the memory of their parents are LaNeta Loucks Pieterick, Rugby, Wendy R. Loucks, Fargo, Brian Loucks, Minot, and Laurie Loucks Domis, Dunseith.
